What Is Gomoku and How Do You Win?
What Exactly Is Gomoku?
Gomoku, sometimes called Five in a Row, is a two-player strategy game with roots in East Asia. The name comes from the Japanese go (five) and moku (stones). Two players, Black and White, take turns placing one stone on a 15x15 grid. The first player to line up five of their stones in a row, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, wins.
How Do You Win at Gomoku?
You win the moment you complete an unbroken line of five stones. The rule sounds simple, but the skill is in building that line while stopping your opponent from doing the same. A few points are worth knowing:
- Five is the magic number. Line up exactly five stones and the game ends. In casual free-style play a line of six also counts; under strict tournament (Renju) rules an overline does not win. For learning, just focus on making five.
- Either player can win on any turn. Because you place one stone per turn, every move is both an attack on your own line and a block on theirs.
- The center is powerful. A stone near the middle reaches in more directions than one in the corner, so the first player usually opens near the center.
Why Gomoku Beats Tic-Tac-Toe
If you have played tic-tac-toe, you know most games end in a draw. Gomoku fixes that. The 15x15 board is large enough that draws are rare, threats can come from anywhere, and there is real room for strategy. It is the game tic-tac-toe wishes it could be.
From the Rules to Your First Win
The fastest way to understand Gomoku is to play it. Black moves first, usually near the center; White responds, and from there it is a race to five. Do not worry about perfect play at the start.
